RSS was in charge of the turn-key Project Management, Design, Development, Assembly, Integration and Validation of the EDRS-MOC for Airbus.
RSS delivered a customised innovative MOC to meet the requirements of Aibus for the EDRS Programme:
The European Data Relay System (EDRS), being developed under ARTES 7, is an independent, European satellite system designed to reduce time delays in the transmission of large quantities of data.
Data relay satellites are placed in geostationary orbit to relay information to and from non-geostationary satellites, spacecraft, other vehicles and fixed Earth stations, which otherwise are not able to be in touch permanently with each other.
To add to Europe’s independence, EDRS fill the gap of a European telecom network that is fast, reliable and seamless. It makes on-demand data available at the right place and at the right time.
Airbus awarded to RSS this contract for MOC infrastructure and services in the frame of the European Data Relay System program EDRS thanks to the significant experience of RSS with Artemis.
In particular, RSS led a consortium consisting of Spacebel (Belgium), Edisoft (Portugal) & Deimos (Portugal) and SES TechCom (Luxembourg) for the design, development, testing and delivery of the EDRS Mission Operation Centre (MOC). The prime system was installed at Airbus facilities in Ottobrunn/ Germany, whereas a backup system was installed and operated by RSS from the ESA station in Redu.
RSS is hosting one of the 5 antennas of the EDRS ground segment. BFLGS is dedicated to EDRS-C (launched end of 2018).
