SAT – AIS (Satellite Automated Identification System)

RSS was in charge of the design of the Ground Segment for SAT-AIS for Lux-Space.

AIS (Automated Identification System) is an automatic tracking information system that allows the boats and the maritime surveillance services to know the identity of the status, the position and the itinerary of the boats situated in their zone.

Although this system is primarily conceived for the surveillance of the coast surroundings, the transmitted signals through AIS guide posts can be detected through satellites in low orbit which enable the detection of the boats in the sea. ESA (European Space Agency) initiated the development of the European Sat-AIS in collaboration with the European Agency for the Maritime Security (EMSA).

In addition, RSS team was selected for the integration, testing, hosting and maintenance of a full motion UHF antenna for TT&C and data collection of a LEO demonstration AIS payload (from Luxspace) installed in Redu:

  • Ground station remotely controllable via a bidirectional A2C link
  • Uplink : 1 Yagi antenna (VHF)
  • Downlink : 2 Yagi antennas (UHF)
